Welcome to Chiang Mai! 5 Simple Tips to Beat Jet Lag and Enjoy Your First Day
Sawasdee ka! On behalf of the C&R Thai Massage team, a warm welcome to our beautiful city, the Rose of the North. You’ve made it through a long journey, and we are so happy to have you here.
We know that after hours spent on a plane, your body and mind can feel like they're still in a different time zone. That groggy, out-of-sync feeling known as jet lag is real, and the temptation to just fall asleep can be overwhelming, even if it’s the middle of the afternoon here in Thailand.
But your holiday time is precious! As locals who have welcomed countless tired travelers since 2014, we’ve learned a few simple secrets to help you sync up with Chiang Mai time quickly. Here are five of our favourite tips to help you beat jet lag and start your adventure feeling refreshed and ready.
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
The first and most important rule. Airplane cabins are incredibly dry, and dehydration is one of the biggest culprits that makes jet lag feel so much worse. Your body is craving water, and replenishing it is the first step to feeling human again.
Local Tip: While plain water is fantastic, treat yourself to a fresh coconut! You’ll see them for sale all over the city. The nam maprao (coconut water) is packed with natural electrolytes, making it one of the best and most delicious ways to rehydrate. Try to limit caffeine and alcohol on your first day, as they can dehydrate you further.
2. Embrace the Chiang Mai Sunlight
Even if your body is telling you it’s midnight, the sun is the most powerful signal you can send to your brain to reset its internal clock (your circadian rhythm). Natural light tells your body, “Okay, it’s daytime here. Time to wake up!”
Local Tip: You don’t need to do anything strenuous. Simply find an outdoor cafe in the Old City, order a fresh fruit smoothie, and sit in the shade for 20-30 minutes. Or, take a gentle, slow stroll around the ancient city moat. Just being outside in the daylight will work wonders.
5. The Ultimate Jet Lag Remedy: A Therapeutic Massage
This is our secret weapon, and the most cherished tool for recovery in Thailand. A therapeutic massage after a long journey is not just a luxury; it's a profound and effective way to press the reset button on your entire system.
Here’s why it works so well:
It Soothes Travel Stiffness: A skilled therapist can directly address the aches and pains that are unique to travel—the stiff neck, the sore lower back, the tight hips from hours of sitting.
It Boosts Sluggish Circulation: The techniques of both Thai and oil massage are designed to get stagnant blood and lymph moving again. This is especially helpful for reducing the swelling that often occurs in feet and ankles after a flight.
It Resets Your Body Clock: This is the real magic. Depending on what your body needs, you can choose a massage to either energize or relax you:
To Relax for Sleep: A gentle Aromatherapy Oil Massage is perfect for the evening. The calming strokes and soothing scents lower the stress hormone cortisol and calm your nervous system, preparing your body for a deep, restorative night’s sleep.
To Energize for the Day: A Traditional Thai Massage is ideal if you need to stay awake and sync with the daytime. The deep, yoga-like stretches invigorate the body, unblock energy lines, and leave you feeling awake, aligned, and full of life.
At C&R Thai Massage, our certified therapists are experts at tailoring a session for tired travelers. We understand the unique strains of long-haul travel and can help you choose the perfect therapy to begin your holiday on the right foot.
Don't let jet lag steal a day of your precious trip. Listen to your body, be gentle with yourself, and from all of us here in the Old City, welcome to Chiang Mai!
3. Gentle Movement is Your Best Friend
After being cramped in an airplane seat for hours, your muscles are stiff and your circulation is sluggish. The thought of exercise might be the last thing on your mind, but gentle movement is key to waking up your body.
Local Tip: Don’t head to the gym! Instead, embrace a “Chiang Mai workout.” Take a slow, mindful walk through the grounds of a nearby temple, like the majestic Wat Chedi Luang. The goal is not to burn calories, but to simply get your blood flowing, stretch your legs, and breathe in the fresh air.
4. Eat on Local Time
Food is another powerful cue for your body clock. Even if you don’t feel particularly hungry, trying to eat your meals at the local Thai time helps your body understand the new schedule.
Local Tip: Don't force a heavy meal. For your first evening, try something light, simple, and nourishing like a bowl of jok (a comforting rice porridge) or a simple noodle soup from a street stall. This will satisfy your body without overwhelming your system.
